More than 60 media outlets, community representatives and local residents turned out on Thursday to commemorate the start of the residential real estate boom in the towns of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, Mich., with a ceremonial groundbreaking at Harbor Shores, Lake Michigan’s first beach and golf resort community just 90 minutes east of Chicago.

Harbor Shores Managing Director Mark Hesemann emceed the event—welcoming attendees and sharing words about the financial stability and future of the project.

Residential Ground Breaking

Yesterday, December 18th, Harbor Shores celebrated the breaking of new ground in its first two neighborhoods, Hideaway and Fairways. Construction began on the first of the new roads in November, and now builders are beginning the foundations of new cottages in Hideway and custom homes in Fairways.

Powell Construction will begin building the first two cottages in Hideaway. Powell expects the cottages to be completed in late spring/early summer just in time for prospective purchasers to preview the model homes in Hideaway. There will be a total of 27, maintenance free, green-built cottages in the first phase. Nearly half of the 27 cottage homesites have been purchased already.

Christie Construction and Inovateus Development have both announced plans to start homes in the custom, single family home community of Fairways. They both anticipate construction lasting through the summer and completion scheduled for early fall. There will be a total of 29 homes built in Fairways.
